Mistakes I Made: Not being a Kidologist

July 28, 2014 by Commander Bill

If you’ve been involved in Children’s Ministry for any length of time, then you may have heard of Karl Bastian. He calls himself a kidologist and owns the web site kidology.org. What is kidology? Simply put, it is the study of kids.

In children’s ministry, we need to do our best to reach children, using things that interest them. One week I found a video on YouTube that someone had made using Legos to tell the story of the Philippian jailer. It captivated the children because of their interest in Legos. I knew that Legos were popular with kids, so why was I surprised today when I asked the kids if they had seen the Lego Movie and they all had? logo_lego_the_movie What surprised me more, and I was actually embarrassed, was that I had not seen the movie. I missed a great opportunity to connect with the children. Needless to say, I will be watching the Lego movie soon.

Have you ever missed an opportunity to connect with kids?

Here is one tip: When you go to see a children’s movie, do not go alone. The year that the first movie for “A Diary of a Wimpy Kid” came out, I was determined to see it the first night it was in theaters. I went to the theater early to purchase a ticket for myself. Then when it was time for the film, I went to the theater by myself, sat near the back and watched the film. As families began to enter the theater, I began to feel like the “creepy guy” in the back of the theater.
